Voicing Adam in an Audio Drama of the Genesis Story

This past winter, I auditioned to play the role of Adam in an audio drama about The Fall in the Book of Genesis that was being produced by a non-profit organization called HeartMatters. I could tell from the audition sides that it was going to be a moving depiction of Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden and I wanted to be involved if possible. A few weeks later, I was pleased to be notified that I had been cast in the role, and in early March, I participated in a remote-directed session with the director, Austin Peachey, and the actress who was voicing Eve, Alicia Hansen. (Alicia is also an audio drama producer with Eternal Future Productions.)

The session went really well, from my perspective at least, and it seemed that Alicia and I were able to have some really good interactions with our characters. The session took about 90 minutes and while it was definitely work, it was an enjoyable kind of work. There were some very emotional moments that needed to have just the right approach and it felt good to push myself to personify the character and bring Adam's feelings to life in this audible art form. It was a very gratifying experience for me as a voice actor who has not been in this biz for nearly as long as the amazing talent that I have listened to for years on programs like Adventures in Odyssey. But I felt that I had done my best to embody the character according to the director's instructions and I looked forward to hearing the final production.

This past week, the audio drama was released and I was very excited to listen! The rest of the cast was fantastic and included Rich Swingle as the voice of God. Rich is an accomplished and award-winning actor who has worked on stage and screen in addition to numerous roles behind the mic.

The script was written by Charlie Richards, who is the creator and producer of the audio drama Life at the Pond, as well as a former writer for Adventures In Odyssey. The sound design (Ben Kempf) and music (Marc Mulcahy) were also very well done and the entire project came together in a wonderful half-hour treat for your ears that packs a powerful message. What a pleasure to be involved in a project with such talented folks!

You can listen in the player below, or head over to the HeartMatters platform here. There you can find a Discussion Question sheet and several other audio dramas as well. They also have a mobile app so you can take these great stories with you on the go. I hope you enjoy listening to "The Serpent from the Beginning"!
